Back to School!
What would you like your client to know about their growth process?
I would like you to know that your growth process started long before you entered therapy with me and will continue long after. I believe that we are constantly in the process of growing, sometimes upwards, sometimes diagonally, sometimes to the side, but regardless, our energy is always moving and always flowing. I believe that part of my role is to support you to channel this energy into growth and progression towards your therapeutic goals.
How do you, as a therapist, stay balanced and motivated?
As a therapist, I feel most energised and motivated when I’m getting to know you better, learning more about your life and understanding how to better support you towards achieving your goals. I find growing and cultivating a healthy relationship with you to be remarkably enriching and fulfilling, especially when I start to build up the picture of who you are and how you experience the world.
To help me stay balanced as a therapist, the most predictable and boring answer is also the correct one: I talk to my therapist.
How do you describe your approach to therapy?
I like to think of therapy as detective work, where, through talking therapy, you provide the information and clues which we will explore together to uncover and identify what is stopping you from reaching your therapy goals. I believe that there are three interconnected key areas that provide all the clues: thoughts, feelings and actions; and that addressing one will have a knock-on effect on the others. Therefore, I prioritise on creating an open, safe and non-judgemental therapeutic space for you to allow you to speak as freely as possible. After all, in the words of Sherlock Holmes – “Data, data, data – I cannot make bricks without clay.”
How much do you allow for humour and lightness in sessions?
In my sessions, there is always room for humour and lightness. And swearing! I strongly encourage you to bring you authentic selves into the therapeutic space and to speak as congruently as possible. If that includes levity, lightness or lewdness then so be it. I desire for all of my clients to know that your sessions with me are an opportunity to be as raw, unfiltered and uncensored as you want them to be, free from shame or judgement.
What do you hope clients take away from their session(s) with you?
If nothing else, after your sessions with me, I hope that you have felt that I have provided you with the time, attention and respect that you deserve. I hope that you feel like you have had the opportunity to be your complete honest self in a safe, non-judgemental environment, a therapeutic space rich in empathy, acceptance and warmth.
