10 sessions | 30 hours CPD | Small group training (maximum 8 participants)
Across ten sessions you will explore the relational dynamics that shape couple relationships and develop practical tools for working with communication, recurring conflict, emotional expression and repair.
The programme combines theory, discussion, experiential learning and practical demonstrations, creating a collaborative learning environment where curiosity and reflection are encouraged.
This training may be a good fit if you:
• would like to begin working with couples
• already work with couples and would like a clearer framework
• want to develop practical skills for managing conflict and relational dynamics in the therapy room
You are encouraged to bring your curiosity, experience and questions into the learning process.
The training runs over 10 weekly sessions (3 hours each) and follows the natural progression many couples experience in therapy:
• understanding the relationship
• working with communication patterns and conflict
• supporting repair and reconnection
• deepening the work through experiential approaches
• navigating ethical complexity
• maintaining change and ending therapy well
Where appropriate, and if you feel ready, you may begin working with one couple during the training programme.
Following Session 4, which focuses on clinical readiness, contracting and suitability for couples work, you may have the opportunity to begin seeing a couple for their first session. The remaining sessions provide space to reflect on and support this work.
This step is optional and based on fitness to practice and professional judgement, ensuring that the work remains safe and supportive for both therapist and clients.
This training is designed for qualified counsellors and psychotherapists who would like to begin working with couples or develop more confidence in their couples work.
To join the programme you should:
• hold a Level 5 qualification (or equivalent) in counselling or psychotherapy
• hold current professional membership with the BACP, NCPS, or an equivalent professional body
• have access to appropriate supervision
This training is not intended for trainees who are still completing their initial counselling qualification.
Groups are intentionally kept small (minimum 4, maximum 8 participants) so there is space for discussion, reflection and experiential learning.

Our role as couples counsellors is not to fix the relationship.
Our role is to help couples develop the tools to understand each other and work things through together.
